Welcome to the FQA Home Page (Archived Dec 2018)

The Fellowship of Quakers in the Arts has as its purpose “to nurture and showcase the literary, visual, musical, and performing arts within the Religious Society of Friends, for purposes of Quaker expression, ministry, witness, and outreach. To these ends, we will offer spiritual, practical, and financial support as way opens.”

A Story For Christmas

A Quaker story for Twelfth Month (December): “Candles In The Window.” For a long time, Quakers refused to “observe” Christmas. So what did they do on that day? This story imagines one Quaker family’s response. It happens in England, in the Yorkshire village of Settle, in 1814, during wartime. (The village and its meeting are quite real, as are the wartime customs described.)  (Story by Chuck Fager)

Maurice River Music

Our next concert is Sunday, November 18, at our usual 2:30 pm. The piano soloist will be Clipper Erickson returning for the fourth time. While our previous concert was of standard repertoire, Clipper will present a new piece which he will have premiered one week previous. It is Laurie Altman’s Tenth Sonata, and is entitled “Aleppo”. This is the ancient city recently destroyed in the Syrian war. It will have been premiered at Temple University on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, which was not the “war to end all wars”.

The other work will be Eight Bible Vignettes by the great African-American composer of a century ago Nathaniel Dett. On October 25 Clipper will be performing this at the Harriet Tubman Museum in Toronto. With our area’s Underground Railroad history, this connection is vivid.

Clipper is sure to bring his engaging, yet scholarly, manner to talk about the music as well

As usual for his recitals, make sure your are signed up early. Email is a very reliable method of signing up:

In the Image of our Creator – What we Make and How it Connects Us

On October 27th a group of Kalamazoo Friends gathered to share something we enjoy making. This event was a response to the challenge from the Fellowship of Quakers in the Arts (FQA) to consider “Art and the Beloved Community”. We shared some how what we make connects us with the one who created us and with each other. It was a fascinating exploration with each of us bringing unique creations, appreciations and experiences but finding a common bond in the sharing. The attached photo essay gives glimpses of our experience together. We concluded the afternoon by exploring ideas for how to expand these connections with our meetinghouse neighbors in the coming year.

The Long Road to Freedom: Performance Art by Chuck Fager and Diane Faison

Chuck Fager knew Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a young civil rights volunteer and spent time with him as a bodyguard during the civil rights struggles during the 1960’s, including a night in jail.  He brings these experiences of that period into a gripping reality.

Diane Faison has been reenacting Harriet Tubman’s life hundreds of times and brings the details of the life of the hero of the Underground Railroad to this performance.

Chuck and Diane are available to bring this performance to Meetings or other groups:  longroadtofreedom@gmail.com

A Green Option for Receiving Types and Shadows

FQA members always have the option of reading (and downloading) Types and Shadows from the website rather than receiving a printed copy in the mail.  Any member who wishes to use this option can email the membership coordinator at fqaquakers@gmail.com.
